Okinawa - U.S. culture symposium held

Date Posted: 1998-06-27

A symposium focusing on Okinawa's present situation and the future possibilities of Okinawan culture in the U.S. was held at the Ryukyu University Sunday. Five experts of Okinawan culture were invited to speak at the conference, where each reported on his or her research results in studies on Okinawa literature, language, and history.

The symposium was a combined effort of the Ryukyu University and Japan Foundation. This is the first time that experts of Okinawa from around the U.S. gathered together and they were greeted by a number of local, scholars and students at the meeting. The main issues put forth at the symposium were Okinawan identity and the problem of preserving Okinawan dialect.

Mr. Lobson, one of the experts asked to speak at the conference, predicted that in the future, the study of Okinawa and the culture of the island will be more popular in the U.S.
