Ota slams defense cooperation guidelines

Date Posted: 1998-06-27

Okinawa Governor Masahide Ohta expressed his displeasure over the new U.S. Japanese defense cooperation agreement, squarely contradicting the opinion by the central government. Both sides expressed their views in speeches commemorating the victims of the battle of Okinawa 53 years ago. "How long Okinawan people have to bear this unfair burden," Ota asked in his speech.

"Steadily to implement the SACO agreement, is the way to fulfill the dreams and hopes of Okinawan people," was the message from Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimot, read by Okinawa Development Agency Director General Muneo Suzuki at the same occasion.
