Nippon Ham Fighters to hold American Ballpark Weekend

Date Posted: 1998-06-20

The Pacific League Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan pro baseball will stage an American Ballpark Weekend Series July 3-5 when they host the rival Seibu Lions. This is in addition to the annual Yankees Day promotion scheduled for Sep. 21.

The idea is to make the Tokyo Dome's atmosphere similar to that of a Major League stadium. Public address announcements will be made in English, there will be American-style pre-game entertainment,, the singing of "YMCA" during the 5th inning infield sweep and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch.

Pre-game activities will include the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" and the throwing of the ceremonial first pitch by an American official. In addition, three companies will serve as title sponsor for one of the games and will offer door prizes to be won by lucky fans.

Friday, July 3, will be Budweiser Night, beginning at 6:15 p.m. Fifty adult winners will carry home a six-pack of Budweiser beer.

Saturday, July 4, will be Northwest Airlines night, starting at 6:00 p.m. Two round-trip tickets for two on Northwest's new non-stop flight between Tokyo and Las Vegas will be awarded to two winners.

Sunday, July 5, will be Sky PerfecTV! Day, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Three lucky winners will receive a tuner-and-antenna set to receive Sky PerfecTV! programming, which includes live Major League Baseball through Pay Per View Japan, and 50 winners at the game will receive a telephone card.

In an effort to further Americanize the scene, the Fighters will present free admission tickets, Reserved Seat B, to the first 1,000 fans who show up at Gate 22 at Tokyo Dome, provided they wear an article of clothing, including a cap, t-shirt, shorts, etc., with the logo of one of the 30 American or National League baseball teams. The free ticket distribution will begin two hours prior to game time of each day of the American Ballpark Weekend.

In addition, Japan Update has a limited number of free tickets to the SkyPerfecTV! Day event. Travel to Tokyo is not included. For tickets, fax 934-5690 or e-mail update@japanupdate.com, first come, first served.
