62 gangsters arrested

Date Posted: 1998-06-20

A total 62 suspected gang members were arrested during the Gangster Counter Measure Operation between Apr. 1 and Jun. 10. That made the total number of suspected gangsters arrested this year to 98, 20 more than at the same time a year before. The Okinawa Prefectural Police has now officially identified 850 people as gangsters.

Nine men identified as heads of criminal and violent organizations were arrested during the operation. The main aim of the police was to destroy large gangs.

Threat with violence was the reason used in arrests in most cases. Seven of the suspects were arrested for theft and eleven are held for assault-type crimes. The police are also planning to enlist the cooperation of the regional tax bureau to go after gangster controlled companies in order to stifle their source of funds.
