Reefs’ condition checked

Date Posted: 1998-06-20

A team of divers and marine biologists started an evaluation of the prefecture’s reefs, Friday. The operation, called Reef Check ‘48 measures the condition of reefs in the different areas of the world using the same standards allowing them to grade the condition of the reefs universally. This marks the second time the group has evaluated reefs in Okinawa. The researchers began their work in Iriomote Island and plan to continue it at nine locations in various parts of the prefecture.

Members of the "Love Dugong Network" made their own search off Henoko Fishing Port to evaluate the condition of the reefs there, Saturday. The group observed the rate of live coral and the number of fish living in the area. The results of the evaluation will be publicized in November after the researchers have summarized their findings.
