New construction rules to stifle gangs' money spigot

Date Posted: 1998-06-13

New regulations governing public construction projects have been put in effect in Taketomi Town, Ishigaki. The new rules are designed to prevent criminal gangs affiliated with construction companies from benefiting from public construction projects.

There has been regulations in the books aimed at excluding the gangsters from public construction projects. The new regulations established by Taketomi Town, however, are the first in Okinawa Prefecture which specifically punishes any company that has any affiliation with gangs with exclusion of two to six months from public construction. The town officials have established a committee to oversee the new regulations with the deputy mayor of Taketomi Town as the chairman. Ishigaki City and Yonaguni Town in neighboring islands have established the same policy. All three municipalities are under same police district.
