Unemployment rate hits record

Unemployment rate in Okinawa Prefecture, long the highest in the nation, has hit record high of 7.8 percent, according to a report by the Okinawa Prefecture Department of Statistics.

The report, published Friday, described the situation as serious with April's unemployment rate at 7.8 percent, an increase of 1.7 percent over last year's rate. The report said that the situation is the worst in 22 years. The rate is well above the national average which was 3.5 percent in April.

The number of unemployed persons stands at 48,000 which is 12,000 more than a year ago.

8.1 percent of male work force is unemployed and 7.3 percent of females. The number of jobs in Okinawa's primary industries stands at 42,000, a 10.6% decrease from a year earlier. Secondary industries employ 113,000 people, a decrease of 8.9%. The only increase has been in tertiary industries which has 415,000 jobs in the prefecture and exceeds last year's figure by 7.8 percent.
