Legendary baseball player to sign autographs

Date Posted: 1998-06-06

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Joe Sambito, an All-Star in 1979 when he notched a career high 22 saves with a 1.78 ERA for the Houston Astros, will sign free autographs at the Okinawa Commissaries on Saturday, June 13.

He will be appearing at the Kadena Commissary from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and at the Foster Commissary from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. He will sign one autograph per person and will sign whatever is provided, including gloves, baseballs, shirts, cards, and more.

Sambito was a starter in the minors and let the Southern League in strikeouts in 1975. The Houston organization converted him to a Major League reliever the following season. In 1978, he led the team in saves, the first of four consecutive seasons. After his career high season in 1979, Sambito completed 1980 with 17 saves and a 2.20 ERA. He made the Boston staff in the spring of 1986 and contributed to the World Series that fall.

A total of 16 members of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) will participate in the tour during the months of June and July, visiting 55 military communities worldwide in 1998.

A big hit among military families the past five years, the tour was established to promote baseball and to give military families an opportunity to experience a part of the American national pastime, according to Patrick Zubrow, director of Corporate Accounts for International Sports Marketing. ISM is the worldwide marketing representative for the MLBPAA.

"Our goal with this program is to bring a taste of our national pastime to all military families, and to give them something to share in regardless of age or favorite baseball team," Zubrow said.
