Prefecture to cut salaries of officials

Date Posted: 1998-05-30

Cash strapped Okinawa Prefecture top officials are going to have to take a ten percent pay cut in their monthly wages and annual bonuses to help the prefecture's finances.

According to officials, the matter will be taken up at the regular Okinawa Prefecture Assembly meeting in June. The pay cuts will then take effect from August pay cycle. The cuts will be in effect until March of 2,000, and will affect all top officials all they way to the governor. The cuts will save the prefecture over ¥200 million.

Okinawa Prefecture has seen a severe budget crunch lately forcing a scale down of many prefectural construction projects and public services. Officials think that cutting the top officials' pay is an effective way to show the public that the prefecture is serious about its plans to rehabilitate its finances.
