Name lands restaurant in troubleDate Posted: 1998-05-30 However, as it turns out, an American restaurant chain owns the rights to the name and character world wide. Recently they sent a letter to the restaurant protesting their use of the name demanding that the restaurant stops using the name or start paying royalties for its use. The owner of the restaurant says that he registered the name locally about 12 years ago, not for a restaurant but for a butcher shop. He said further, that it seems that he has to change the name. He said that he had sent the copyright owners a letter agreeing to do so. According to a lawyer representing the American restaurant chain, they had discovered several other establishments in Okinawa using the name "Popeye" and the character illegally. He said that all those businesses had received a letter telling them to stop using the name without permission. |
