Awase former Hypermart re-opens as Coop Awase

Date Posted: 2003-03-28

Coop Awase, a department store affiliated with Okinawa JA (Farmers' Cooperation) has opened a new store in the former facilities of DaiEi Hypermart. Hypermart closed doors in August 2002.

The new store opened Marach 21, employing 120 people. The annual sales is expected to exceed 1.7 billion, with an average 2,000 shoppers visiting the store each day.

Coop Awase management says it conducted a thorough survey before deciding to open the business. The Coop says all indications are that the number of potential shoppers in the area is more than adequate. The key to success, they say, is "to ensure that the customers find what they want in the store and have a relaxed and enjoyable shopping experience."

Coop Okinawa, the parent company of the new store's operator, has leased the first floor and parking space from the facility's owner, DaiEi Real Estate Co. Director Masahiro Ota of the DaiEi Real Estate Co. is optimistic that the facility will soon be a major retail outlet in Okinawa again. "We are still in the process of securing new tenants for the rest of the building, but we are confident that all slots will be filled by the end of the year," Ota stated.
