Farmer attacks man with sickle

Date Posted: 1998-05-24

Early Sunday evening in Katsuren Town, located in northern Okinawa, a door-to-door collector working for NHK was attacked by a frustrated, intoxicated farmer. The man, 23, was collecting money from NHK customers and as he knocked on the door of Kiyomitsu Nakayone's home, the 66-year-old farmer came up behind him and attempted to hit him with a sickle. When he missed, Nakayone ran and the collector chased after him. When caught, the farmer attacked the young man, slashing his head with the sickle.

Neighbors witnessing the assault immediately called the police, who arrived on the scene and arrested Nakayone. When asked why he hit the man, he answered, "I was mad because he came to collect money from me. I didn't want to pay so I ran and then when he chased me, I hit him."

The collector is in a nearby hospital, where he suffers from serious head wounds, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
