Record rainfall disrupts traffic

Date Posted: 1998-05-24

Heavy rains disrupted peoples lives and caused delays in traffic, Tuesday. In the course of the day, Naha received 77 mm of rain while Tokashiki recorded 67 mm and Tamagusuku and Nago City reported 50 mm of rainfall. Heavy rains caused several delays in flight schedules when planes couldn't take off from Naha Airport due to poor visibility caused by the rain. The flights were delayed up to 40 minutes.

Traffic was disrupted in many places because streets become flooded. For example, in front of the Okinawa Prefectural Building in Naha, the water ran knee-deep which stopped many cars and motorcycles on their tracks. A landslide in Gushikawa City forced the closure of Road 112 for a day until city engineers were able to clear the mess.
