Get into the summer mood at Kadena Marina

Sailing, scuba diving, and a fun day at the beach are some of the great things you can expect to find at the Kadena Marina. The beach will open this month, and there are also many other water related sports you can enjoy during the hot months here on Okinawa. It is conveniently located off of Highway 58 right next to Toys R Us, and it provides a variety of outdoor recreation for all visitors.

One of the services the Marina provides is scuba diving. The Kadena Services' Scuba Locker gives patrons a wide selection of gear to choose from, with brand names like Sherwood, Body Glove, Genesis, and Dacor. Everything from fins, to regulators and wet suits can be found, along with many other marine accessories. Anyone that has been thinking of buying some snorkeling or diving equipment this year, will be happy to know that there will be a huge sale at the Scuba Locker on May 23, 24 , and 25. The shop is a combination retail and rental store, where you can also sign up for scuba lessons. Friendly staff assist you with all your needs and questions. The rental section can rent you any piece of equipment you may need for your diving excursions. They can also suit you up with a complete scuba rental outfit for $25. The Scuba Locker fills tanks for $1, and can also do repairs.

Moving to the lower half of the marina, you will find the beach to your left. The beach is situated in a nice little cove, and it is an excellent place to bring children. It is safe and life guards are always on duty during hours that the beach is open to the public. There is also a nice picnic area behind the beach, which provides an excellent place to enjoy a day of barbecuing and swimming with friends and family. Pavilions can be rented free of charge by contacting Kadena outdoor recreation.

Sea kayaks, paddle boats, and wind surfing boards are also available for rental. It is a great chance to try out some of the equipment for a day of fun out on the ocean. The calm waters of Kadana Marina's small bay present a nice safe haven to practice your skills at very reasonable prices. Paddle boats and kayaks can be rented for $6 per hour, and windsurfers are available for $5 per hour.

The other side of the marina is where you will find the many power boats and yachts. The marina provides moorings for private boat owners, and also oversees many other functions associated with a marina. The staff has also recently installed two brand new 180 foot long docks. Many of the boats can be privately chartered for small groups or large groups of up to twenty people. The boat charters are a great way to really see some of the beautiful areas of Okinawa from the sea, as well as visiting some of the nearby small islands. They offer great diving in crystal clear waters with plenty of marine life to observe. Special dive charters out to the Kerama Islands for $45 per person are scheduled just about every Saturday, but the popular excursions fill up fast, so you should call in advance for reservations. Sundays usually provide the opportunity for boat dives to closer locations around Okinawa. Deep Sea Fishing Charters are available through the Kadena Marina at approximately $50 to $65, depending upon the size of the boat and amount of people. You can rent a small power boat, after completing a $25 safety course. The course is required for everyone, regardless of experience, to familiarize boaters with regulations and safety precautions around Okinawan waters. The rental fee for a power boat is $15 for one hour or $50 for four hours. Both prices include fuel. You can take sailing lessons for $100, upon which you will receive certification. After completing the sailing course, you can rent sailboats from the marina at $35 for four hours or $45 for eight hours The nearby "Sail Loft" sells soft drinks and snacks, and can help you with any questions you may have about boat rentals.

Another very popular boat charter is the sunset cruise, which leaves the marina at 6 pm and returns between 8 pm and 8:30 pm. The cruise lets you enjoy a relaxing few hours out on the water with a cool breeze and a spectacular sunset. The sunset cruise is only available for groups, and you can make reservations through the Marina.

If you have always wanted to get out and try some of the exciting activities the ocean has to offer, then you should pay a visit to the Kadena Marina. Also, don't miss out on this month's Scuba Locker Memorial Day weekend sale. Please call 634-6344 for information or for reservations.
