Number of high-season tourists up over last year

Date Posted: 2002-01-17

The number of passengers flying in and out of Okinawa during the winter high season increased by 5.9 percent over the previous year’s figures, announced the Prefectural Bureau of Tourism and Resorts. Approximately 530,000 tourists visited the island during the popular two-week period, which runs from Dec. 22-Jan. 6, easing officials’ worries about the sudden drop in tourism resulting from the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States. The number of canceled school trips from the mainland, however, is certain to result in fewer visitors than the previous year despite the current uncertainty concerning probable trends in individual tourist visits.
