Brown sugar tea producer arrested over claims

Date Posted: 1998-05-16

Okinawa City Police arrested a producer of brown sugar drink, Thursday, on suspicion of violating the Japanese medical law code. The police suspect that Seiho Kina, 63, manufactured and sold a drink made of tea and brown sugar and then sold it as a medicine.

According to investigators, Kina had printed pamphlets touring the medical virtues of his tea drink in violation of the law. In his pamphlets he claimed that the tea had been proven effective even in cases where conventional medicine had failed. "This tea is especially effective in curing ailments of muscles, brain and nerves," the pamphlets read. The police say that none of this was proven in any way.

Kina was selling the drink in five shops for 2,000 per 500 gram package. The police found the product after getting a tip from a customer. They were able to track down the maker of the concoction. Kina had made the drink in a workshop next to his house where they found some 100 packs of the drink, pamphlets and a machine to package it.
