Tomishiro debates whether to become part of Naha

Date Posted: 1998-05-16

Tomishiro Village, located next to Naha City, has a population of 32,874 and, according to many, would be entitled to the status of a town. At the same time, there is a growing movement, especially among the village's business community, to merge the village with Naha City.

A group of citizens who have formed an association to promote the merger, has collected 994 signatures from people who are supporting the idea. That is more than the 2 percent of voters required by law to set up an official committee to study the idea.

Tomigusuku Mayor Seiyu Kakazu has also reportedly taken the matter up with Naha City Mayor Kosei Oyadomari who, in turn, will present it to the Naha City Assembly. Likewise, Tomishiro Village Assembly will hold their own discussions.

However, the fate of the possible merger depends on both assemblies agreeing to the idea and then setting up a formal joint committee to realize it.
