Westpac to close Gate 2 Street shop

Date Posted: 1998-05-16

An era will come to an end when one of the Gate 2 Street's landmark vendors, Westpac Corp. will pack its wares and move the shop to Guam. For 29 years Westpac has been the destination for those who have been looking for inexpensively priced home electronics products, or high end products that have not been readily available at on-base stores.

According to Minoru Fukumoto, the managing director of Westpac, the company will close its retail operation on Gate 2 Street and open a new office in Ginowan City which will concentrate on wholesale and service businesses. "We decided to move the retail operation to Guam where our parent company has had a store catering mainly to tourists for many years," Fukumoto said. "We also discovered that we can still serve our military customers through mail. It turns out that it's cheaper for us, for example, to mail a stereo set to Kadena Air Base from Guam than do the same from Tokyo," Fukumoto explained. He also said that they are planning to develop a comprehensive electronics warehouse sales operation utilizing the Internet. Westpac's customers can address any questions they may have to: fukumoto@southernx.ne.jp. The new telephone number is 897-3912.

Fukumoto emphasizes that Westpac will continue to service PA and other systems they have sold to various military and other on-base organizations and that they will continue in that part of the business.

With Westpac moving out of town, the once thriving home electronics business catering to military customers in Okinawa comes to an end.
