Men arrested in connection with passport scandal

Date Posted: 1998-05-09

Chinese men pursued by Prefectural police in counterfeit passport scandal. Two Chinese men are being sought by Okinawa Prefectural police for making illegal passports to become Japanese citizens. Police believe that the Yakuza may be involved in hiding these men. Two men living in Gushikawa City have been arrested. In mid-March, Okinawa Prefectural Passport delivery section questioned a woman who came in to pick up the two passports.

The section personnel noticed something strange about the passports and the staff decided to question the woman. She ran away however, leaving the passports behind, and arousing the suspicion of officals. Passport office officials in turn called the police and discovered the passports were illegally made. A similar ploy was used in an incident in Hokkaido. According to the center, the woman looked Asian, although not Japanese. When they started to question her, she was very uncertain and unable to answer the questions. She looked frightened and ran away.
