Man almost drowns near Naha

Date Posted: 1998-05-09

On the afternoon of April 30, a lifeguard at Naminoue Beach, just outside of Naha City, spotted Tsunekichi Itokazu, 56, swimming beyond the roped safety area. While keeping his eye on the man, the lifeguard went about his other duties at the beach. The next time he looked up, he was unable to see the swimmer. A few minutes later, he saw someone floating face-down in the East China Sea. The lifeguard immediately called an ambulance and pulled the man from the water. It appeared the man's heart had stopped beating.

Resuscitation attempts by the ambulance crew failed. The situation appeared hopeless as they arrived at the hospital. Further attempts by hospital staff successfully brought the man's heart back to life. Authorities believe that Mr. Itokaza, a businessman, was under water three to five minutes before being rescued. He is currently recuperating in an area hospital.
