Rainy season begins early

Date Posted: 1998-05-09

Okinawan officials formally announced the beginning of rainy season, Tuesday, a week earlier than previous years. Rainy season usually begins in Okinawa towards mid-May and proceeds to mainland Japan in mid-June.

Heavy rains brought landslides and minor floods to Okinawa and some surrounding islands, Monday. In Hirara City, Miyako Island, a local road was underwater and traffic was stopped by police along the stretch. A landslide caused a dairy farmer to lose his home in Kunigami Village after a 20 by 40 meter section of earth slid down the side of a mountain, damaging the building and a nearby road. Police arrived on the scene and determined that the earth was saturated so heavily with water, there was no way the landslide could have been prevented.
