A star has landed on Okinawa! Maria Howell appears in Naha on Friday and Saturday nights, shinning at the Light House in the Tomari Hotel. This vision of beauty, grace and poise sings to a completely captivated audience. There is no wonder why she holds the audience in the palm of her hand. This petite bombshell has a voice that has been touched by an angel with a vocal range as wide as the ocean. Her style can not be labeled because she is truly a chameleon on stage. However she can be characterized as sultry, sexy, sassy, seductive and just plain smooooth!

Maria hails from the small town of Gastonia, North Carolina where she began her singing career at the age of thirteen singing in church. She graduated from Winston Salem University with a Bachelors Degree in Biology. After college she worked utilizing her degree setting up jobs for pre-medicine majors however her singing aspirations laid ever in the foreground of her mind. It was there that she found out about auditions for the "The Color Purple" and thereby began her ascent to stardom.

Maria's mastery of music is a sensuous fusion of rhythm & blues, jazz and contemporary old standards that makes her repertoire unique yet fascinating. She is truly an experienced professional having graced the stage along with top performers such as Najee, George Howard, Ramsey Lewis, George Benson, Ronnie Laws, Nancy Wilson, Tuck & Patti, Marvin Hamlisch, Kim Waters and Ray Charles.

Maria's singing talent catapulted her onto the silver screen. As the choir soloist in "The Color Purple," her performance was acclaimed nationally by critics as being "One of the film's most stirring moments!"

This film opened the doors for Maria as a credible actress and led to future roles in George Lucus' "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" as a singer named "Goldie." In the USA Network movie "Linda," starring Richard Thomas, Virginia Madsen, and T.E. Russell, she appeared as "Shirley Hill." She also appeared as "Elsa" in the CBS movie "Scattered Dreams" that starred Tyne Daly and Gerald Mcraney. In the world of theater, Maria played alongside Dr. Maya Angelou as her daughter, "Marietta," in Langston Hugh's "Tambourines to Glory."

Do not miss this musically romantic interlude. The Light House is a cozy hideaway nestled in an ambiance of sophistication. The Tomari Hotel is located on Hwy. 58 in Naha. You can not miss the hotel because you will see ships docked to the immediate right of the hotel. The Light House is located on the far left hand side of the hotel, just underneath the walk way on the left. You have to take the stairs to the basement floor. The first set starts at 10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night and cost is 2500 per person.
