Date Posted: 1998-04-25

Marine Corps Base, Camp Butler, Okinawa on April 20, a Marine lance corporal was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday morning in lower Camp Foster. The Marine was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:55 a.m.

His body was discovered by four Marines who noticed a Marine lying on the hillside above Evans Clinic. They notified medical personnel at Evans Clinic who then responded to the scene.

Marine Corps Base Provost Marshall authorities had initiated an identification check on incoming and outgoing traffic at all Marine Corps installations after learning the Marine had failed to return a Beretta 9mm pistol and ammunition Sunday afternoon at the Marine MWR pistol range. Additionally, a PMO task force was activated to work the case. The name is being withheld pending next of kin notification. The incident is currently under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
