Navel Kadena launches Golden Week Carnival

Date Posted: 1998-04-25

Navel Kadena will be kicking off its Golden Week Carnival beginning April 24th on Arbor Day. This special promotional event will span the Japanese holidays Earth Day, Constitution Day, and Children's Day, before culminating on Mother's Day, May 10th. During this 17-day promotion, Navel Kadena will feature events that will include huge sales of house ware and jewelry items. Other items of interest will include the Toys 'R Us annual bicycle sale, Cocomart's free food giveaways, and other sales offered by bazaar vendors.

This is one time that you won't want to leave the kids at home because several special events are planned just for them. During the Golden Week Carnival, children will get the opportunity to meet some of their favorite Japanese television characters. Boys won't want to miss the opportunity to meet the Japanese super heroes, the Car Rangers and Gingaman. Younger kids will surely want to see the friendly Robotech robots or the Stuffed Animal Band. Both boys and girls will go wild over the animated characters from the hit animal show, Dr. Slamp. Your kids also might want to match wits against other Okinawan children at the Jyankenpo (Rock, Scissors, Paper) contest. For a complete schedule of events and times, check out the schedule later in this article. Most of these events will occur around the outdoor stage during the Golden Week Carnival, but after this campaign the stage can be reserved by civic organizations. If your looking for an outdoor stage to promote a cultural exchange with the local community, your group will be allowed to use the stage free of charge. Just contact the Navel Kadena business office at 956-8085 or Japan Update at 934-5616 if you need language assistance.

Also during the carnival, the new management of Navel Kadena, the Daei Corporation, would like to learn your thoughts on how they can improve the mall. During the Golden Week Carnival, Daei will be offering a free gift to anyone who completes a shopping survey. Since they are interesting in learning as much as they can from all of their customers, they will be offering this questionnaire in English as well as Japanese.

The results of this survey will be used to plan Navel Kadena's expansion projects over the coming year.

If you never visited Navel Kadena, you may be surprised. This shopping center offers many of the same names and kinds of stores you might find in any American mall, such as; Toys 'R Us, Shakey's, MacDonald's, and Mister Donuts. Even if you don't recognize the names of the other stores, you could easily find similar stores in most stateside malls. There are two department stores, Marue and Cox; five clothing and accessories stores, Blue Bell, it's, PJ. Yamada, Shina Kadena, and Suzutan; and two cosmetic stores, Esthetic Salon and Maikoudou Cosmetics. Other stores include the Bakeman Bakery, Blue Seal Ice Cream, Tokyo Delica Fabrics, the Miyawaki Book Store, the Megane Segando Optical Shop, Navel Drug, Music Plaza, the Kutsuno Marutomi Shoe Store, Heartland Patchwork Crafts, the Cocomart Supermarket, and two Japanese restaurants, the Kurima and Kafuu.

Whether you are a veteran Okinawan shopper or new to the off-base shopping scene, be sure to stop by and check out the great values during the Golden Week Carnival. With expanded parking for up to 990 cars, you are sure to find room for your Family Truckster.
