Parents cry abuse at local kindergarten

Date Posted: 1998-04-18

In Naha City at a Kindergarten classroom a 1½ year old baby boy was confined to a bed with bars. The child was put in this area for 4 days in a row. The child was put there supposedly because he had bitten other children in the nursery. Although the kindergarten officials say they did not continuously confine the child, parents and children that use the school say that they saw the baby confined to the bed for four days. The Kindergarten officials say that the child was put in the area only for the duration of his nap time, because the child was known to fall out the bed.

According to other parents their children had been bitten by one of the children in the Kindergarten, and complained to the school. It was realized that the baby boy was the child that had bitten the other children. The teacher commented that the child was only confined during the nap period and that when he woke was allowed to play with the other children.

The baby boy's parents plan on taking the kindergarten to court. According to the parents of the boy they got information from other parents that their child had been confined and went to investigate the conditions under which their child was kept. Other parents reported that the child was kept confined all day. However the kindergarten disputed this report.
