Organ donations promoted

Date Posted: 1998-04-12

Relay of Life Caravan Tour is on the move, promoting organ donation in Japan. The group is headed by two nurses who plan to bicycle throughout Japan giving out donor cards and educating the communities they visit on the importance of organ donation.

Ms. Shizu Yasuda, and Ms. Satami Kaneko, both 24, picked Okinawa for the start of their tour due to its location at the southern end of their itinerary. During the four month tour, the duo will cover more than 3,000 kilometers and hope to spread their message and get donors to sign up all over Japan.

The nurses were prompted to organize this tour after a nurses association meeting where the discussion of transplanting was met by confusion. The two nurses decided that education about the benefits of organ donation was needed. Japanese traditionally refuse to take part in the giving or receiving of organs.
