Motorcycle safety committee formed

Date Posted: 1998-04-12

Okinawa police have organized a new department aimed at curbing motorcycle violence, the first such program for Japan. The motorcycle promotion committee opened on April 1 and will be run by non-police committee members.

Okinawa was chosen for this pilot program because of its high number of criminal incidents committed by drivers of motorcycles in the area. Many young riders use their bikes to intimidate other motorists and create potentially dangerous situations by hitting other vehicles, speeding, and racing between cars.

Police continuously arrest the riders but they often repeat the crimes. The new committee is taking a more proactive approach by providing counseling and alternatives to racing for the youths. Committee members were chosen for their experience in working with adolescents. The program will provide help for the youths, their families, and the local schools.
