Asahibashi bus terminal planned for new monorail

Date Posted: 2002-01-17

A proposal to connect Okinawa’s new monorail system to a bus terminal at Naha City’s Asahibashi Station was recently unveiled at the prefectural offices. The announcement was made in conjunction with district redevelopment plans by Yoshimasa Koja, chairman of the Kaleido Square Promotion Committee and vice-president of Okinawa Electric Company. Local businesses in the Asahibashi area have been actively involved in the proposal, which encompasses 10 hectares and is estimated to cost more than ¥50 billion. Actual construction is scheduled to begin in 2003 with a completion date envisioned for 2007. The project, expected to create more than 2,000 new jobs, calls for a bus terminal to be connected to the monorail station and adjacent buildings by means of overpasses.
