Burglars target island hardware centers

Date Posted: 1998-04-05

A rash of burglaries at home centers throughout Okinawa has island police searching for a perpetrator, believed to have committed five separate robberies. Late last Tuesday or early Wednesday morning, an individual broke into the Thank You Home Center in Asato and stole more than ¥8,500,000 worth of merchandise, including jewelry, accessories, and clothing. The picky thief left behind less expensive Rolex watches while he or she broke the display cases to gather the more expensive timepieces.

Store employees discovered the robbery after the daily staff meeting on Wednesday morning when they went to the second floor of the store. Police were called to the scene and concluded the thief broke large windows to enter and exit the store. The store’s security system, which included video surveillence cameras, failed during the time of the robbery.

On Saturday, the Sakamoto Home Center in Urasoe City reported more than 270 items worth ¥3,500,000 missing. When police arrived at the business, they found the method of entry was the same as the Asato robbery and similar items were stolen. The security system in the store again seemed to fail.

Police suspect that three other similar robberies reported around the island were committed by the same individual and have launched a large-scale investigation into the crimes.
