Police to monitor students' knives

Date Posted: 1998-04-05

Recent incidents involving young school students using knives in assaults and surveys indicating that many students routinely carry knives with them has prompted the local police to devise precautions in order to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Okinawa Prefectural police will conduct strict searches of boys and girls suspected of carrying knives in conjunction with their new policy. Specifically, the police in the urban areas will keep an eye on shops selling knives. The campaign is scheduled to last through the end of the week.

Police strongly advise that because of the increase in incidents involving the use of knives especially by junior high school boys, they must strictly enforce this policy. They feel that because of the spring vacation time and up to 350 shops selling knives in Okinawa they must keep up vigilant enforcement policy to let store owners know that teens are not allowed to purchase or carry knives.
