Makiminato bridge on Highway 58 opens

Date Posted: 1998-04-05

It took more than seven years, but the Makiminato Bridge along Highway 58 in Naha has finally opened. An opening celebration was held on Monday to commemorate the occasion.

The four lane bridge, located in the Makiminato area in Naha, was built to alleviate congested traffic along this stretch of the highway. Members of the U.S. military community who travel regularly between Camp Kinser and bases further north will especially benefit. The new Makiminato Bridge is 440 meters long and has already made a difference in the traffic below, it seems.

However, there are some things motorists should know if they plan on using the bridge on the trip to or from Naha. No traffic will be allowed on the bridge if wind speeds rise above 12 meters, no pedestrians or bicycles are allowed, although motorcycles are permitted, there are no traffic lights, and absolutely no parking will be allowed on any stretch of the bridge. Naha City officials are hoping that if motorists follow the rules and drive safely, the traffic will continue to flow.
