Nation-wide 6,000 km walk-a-thon on way

Date Posted: 1998-04-05

Opening ceremonies were held for the 'Long Legs 6000 km Walk,' Saturday. The event was being held to raise money for an orphanage for children of cancer victims. At the opening ceremony the popular band, The Diamantes, performed and also attended the walk. This walk began locally in Naha, Okinawa at the Paletto Kumoji square and will eventually end in October in Tokyo. Municipalities and prefectures on the way are planning to hold various events and welcome the walkers.

A member of Okinawa-Prefecture Long Legs 6,000 km Walk Committee commented that "We can't take away the children's sadness of losing their parents but we may be able to ease their pain with a large show of support."

According to official figures, approximately 72 children a day lose their parents to cancer. A total of 166,000 children lose their parents every year and have to be taken to orphanages.
