Fugitive caught on Miyako Island

Date Posted: 1998-03-28

Miyako Island police arrested a young man who was sought by mainland police on Saturday evening after hotel employees discovered that he was wanted by Aomori Prefecture officials. The man, 18, originally from Hachinohe City in Aomori, was unemployed and living in the Shimogi-cho Hotel in Miyako City, using stolen funds to pay for his daily needs.

He was being sought after stealing a postal savings account card and using it in various instant-cash machines, illegally withdrawing 3,000,000 from the victim's account. Police have been searching areas in mainland Japan for the young man, but it was a surprise to them when he was found in Miyako Island, a small island off of southern Okinawa.
