Report fires and emergencies with your cell phone soon

Date Posted: 1998-03-28

Starting April 1, cellular phone users will be able to access fire and rescue services from these portable phones. This service was previously available only to NTT customers. Officials expect the new service will help reduce response times of fire and rescue crews. Users can access the new service by dialing 119. This number will then ring into a central switchboard and the caller will be transferred to the appropriate local station. Because all calls will ring into one switchboard, there may be busy periods during high call traffic hours, but officials are urging residents to keep trying until their emergency is reported.
