Schoolgirl drowns in Nago river

Date Posted: 2003-03-22

A seven-year-old schoolgirl drowned in Yabu river in Miyazato, Nago City, while playing with friends on Sunday. Nago Police say Nanami Shimabukuro had gone with four friends to the river to catch crabs. She had apparently wandered in a deep part of the river and sank to the bottom without her friends noticing.

One of the other children noticed that Nanami was missing, and went to a nearby restaurant for help. The restaurant owner called the police. A rescue team arrived and found the missing girl in five minutes in 1.6 meters of water. Resucitation efforts were started immediately, but to no avail. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Although there is no fence preventing anyone from entering the river, local residents say hildren normally do not play in the river.
