Fisherman and divers clash yet again

Date Posted: 1998-03-27

A constant battle between fishermen and divers in Miyako Island has led to yet another court case to be filed in the Okinawa courts. Two divers recently filed complaints against two members of the Fisherman's Association in the Naha District Court, Hirara Branch. Four other fishermen are currently involved in a court case after divers filed complaints due to the antics of the association members.

According to an investigation started by the prosecutor's office, when a group of tourists from mainland Japan began their dive, a nearby fisherman followed them into the water and threatened them with a spear-like fishing tool. He approached the divers and demanded go away, apparently telling them that they chased the fish away and must leave the area.

For more than five years, tourist groups have clashed with the association as to who has rights to use the waters surrounding Miyako Island.
