Miyako Island burglaries solved

Date Posted: 1998-03-27

Four teenage boys were arrested March 12 on Miyako Island and confessed to burglarizing 33 homes and businesses since January 1997. The boys, aged 14 to 16, admitted to stealing articles whose total value was more than 1,280,000, including motorcycles, cash, watches and jewelry.

Police launched an investigation into the reported burglaries and found that the group entered residences and offices by breaking windows, picking locks and through unlocked doors. The thefts occurred from January, 1997 through late February.

Residents of Hirara City, Miyako Island's largest town, population 30,000, were shocked to learn that local boys were committing these crimes but also relieved that the thieves have been caught and they can now relax.
