Irate man runs over woman

Date Posted: 1998-03-27

In the Kanagawa Prefecture in mainland Japan, a deadly incident at an intersection may be one of the first incidents of road rage in the country.

Hidayuki Chinan, 25, and a passenger became enraged when Seishin Horoi, 35, honked at them to move their van after the light turned. Rather than driving off, Chinan exited his vehicle and walked toward Mr. Horoi's car. Demanding to know why he honked his horn, Mr. Horoi got out of his car to reason with the driver and was pummeled as he left his vehicle. A fight broke out between the two men and Chinan's passenger began to participate in the attack.

Mr. Horoi's wife, Keiko, a passenger in the car, ran to a police kiosk around the corner to explain the situation and ask for help. She led the police to the area where the fight was taking place and when she leaned over in front of the van to record the license plate number, Chinan got into his van and ran her over, killing Mrs. Horoi instantly.

Police witnessed the accident and immediately arrested Chinan. According to the police, he was upset that she called police to the scene and deliberately drove over the victim. Chinan, however, claims he got in to drive away and did not see her standing in front of the van.
