Kunigami mayor accused of attacking assembly member

Date Posted: 2003-03-22

The mayor of Kunigami Village is embroiled in controversy after an assembly member accuses him of assault more than a year ago. The assembly member filed a complaint with the police alleging the mayor had attacked him during an argument at a party.

The assembly member says that while drinking at a assembly end-of-term party, Kunigami Mayor Kousaku Uehara threw a glass of awamori on his face. Neither party is willing to say what started the argument in the first place, nor why the assemblyman waited almost a year before reporting the incident.

Police have completed their investigation and sent the results to the public prosecutors’ office. The prosecutors’ office has not decided whether to indict the mayor. Kunigami Village Office refused to comment on the incident, and said the office considers the incident a private matter between the mayor and the assemblyman.
