Giant Robo Sets Anime Trend!!!

Date Posted: 1998-03-20

In an alternate retro-future Earth, A super secret force known as the International Police Organization manned by Espers (people born with paranormal powers) battle an evil world wide terrorist group 'Big Fire' bent on global domination. Among the IPO's weapons is the most powerful robot on the planet, Giant Robo. The cartoon opens with IPO's 'Experts Of Justice' trying to rescue Dr. Shizuma from the clutches of Big Fire. Dr. Shizuma created the 'Shizuma Drive', a power source which has replaced every single source of energy on our world. Big Fire is not without their own paranormal members and send Lord Alberto to capture Shizuma and the final Shizuma prototype which will bring upon Earth's greatest age of darkness, Can Daisaku Kusama and his Giant Robo stop them? So starts off episode one of the 7 chapter animated epic which had fans throughout the world waiting 7 years to complete.

This animated adventure mixes several different genres together in a blend of hard Sci-Fi, Action, & Human Drama that will be sure to please everyone from 13 years on up. This series is thoughtfully Directed & Written by Yasuhiro Imagawa, ably assisted by Eiichi Matsuyama. Also on the team were Animation Director Mr. Katayama, Character Designs by Mr. Kubooka & Mr. Yamashita, Image Concept Designs by Mr. Kobayashi, & Mecha Designer Mr. Watabe and an army of animators who brought to life this world of skyscraper sized robots, paranormal heroes and villains so evil they put Darth Vader to shame. Of course with any type of production, nothing sets the mood like a musical score (I.E. Titanic, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, etc.) and trust me, the soundtrack for Giant Robo is epic in scope. Written by Mr. Amano & performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, this soundtrack at the least rivals John Williams or even James Horner's Titanic score and even incorporates classical pieces that add to one killer CD! If you like movie music, do not pass this soundtrack up.

Giant Robo incorporates several of Mr. Mitseru Yokoyama's creations which include Gigantor (Known in Japan as Testujin No. 28), Babel II, God Mars, Giant Robo, and The Three Worlds Chinese Epic. Yokoyamasan has been credited as being the father of the Japanese Giant Robot craze and rightly so. The animation is smooth & beautifully rendered with a distinctive look that pays homage to the Japanese cartoons such as Astro Boy, Gigantor & 8th Man. The cartoon has spawned several cartoons with the popular lead heroine, the half Chinese, half German Esper...Ginrei! Also available are a myriad of authorized & unauthorized model kits, toys, books, CD-Roms and much more based on this animated epic. If you are an anime fan or are just wondering what all the hype is about, I strongly recommend getting the first episode of Giant Robo 'The Night The Earth Stood Still' and watching it in one sitting, When it's over I'm sure you'll be on line ordering the remaining six videos post haste.

Did You Know: That Giant Robo was an early 1960's live action TV originally in Japan and later exported to the States called Johnny Soko & His Flying Robot??
