Fire prevention campaign off to start

Date Posted: 1998-03-20

The annual Spring Fire Prevention Campaign of Okinawa kickedf off, Sunday, beginning in Naha City and expected to spread throughout the island in the next month.

On Tuesday, a fire demonstration was held outside Palette Kumoji by the Naha City Fire Department and organizers asked citizens to use caution with flammable materials. "All fires are your fires. Fight the fire until it's completely out" is this year's slogan.

Yoshio Choda, Assistant Director at the Naha City office, asked residents to do their best "to make urban life free of fires and peaceful" for all who live in the community. The Chairman of the Day for the fire department was Yuko Takara, a stewardess with JTA. She arrived to the event accompanied with young children from Kainan Kindergarten who pledged never to play with fire.

At the ceremony, Naha City gave awards to those companies, establishments and schools with a perfect track record. Winners included Harbor View Hotel and the Ishimine Elementary School. Firefighters assisted children up the ladders of the fire trucks and also demonstrated how dangerous cooking oil can be. Many children were unaware of the danger of the substance and became frightened but also respectful of the risks associated with common everyday things.
