Incumbent elected mayor of Ishigaki City

Chosho Ohama, the incumbent Ihigaki City Mayor, was declared the winner in the hotly contested mayoral election, Sunday.

In the ballot, Ohama received 13,801 votes while his opponent, Kokichi Iramine, won 12,633. With the ballots counted, incumbent Ohama was re-elected the mayor of Ishigaki City. Ohama, a supporter of Okinawa Governor Mashide Ota, was backed by parties ranging from socialists, to communists, to religion based groups, and social democrats. Iramine was backed mainly by liberal democrats, but was unable to topple the well-respected Ohama.
