Man dies while jogging along a local road

Date Posted: 1998-03-14

Late Sunday evening, a taxi driver came across an injured man lying in a pool of blood in Nishizaki, Itoman. The driver called local police and an ambulance, which transported the man to a local hospital. Twenty minutes after his arrival, doctors pronounced Iriha Choken dead.

Choken, 66, was the executive director of a large local company. According to Itoman City police, they suspect the victim was hit by an automobile while jogging. Sunday brought rain to the area and the narrow road was slick, a possible cause for the accident.

While authorities were investigating the scene, a couple arrived at the Itoman City police station and admitted they had been driving along the road at the time the accident occurred. They were unsure whether they had hit Choken but said they may have been responsible for the accident.

No charges have been pressed, pending further investigation. Choken's family said he was following a regular running routine at the time of the accident.
