Enjoy a luncheon buffet in a jungle paradise

Date Posted: 2003-03-15

If you would like to fight off the cold and at the same time sample some exotic dishes, the place to go is the Southeast Botanical Gardens in Okinawa City, where you will feel as if you were in a subtropical jungle. Covering an area of 400,000 hectares, this is the largest subtropical garden in Japan, with flowers in bloom all year around. While visiting the gardens you can enjoy various buffet dishes at Botanika, which opened in September 2002. The restaurant is surrounded by the Water Garden, complete with the abundant water and rich green of a subtropical forest. Unique taste sensations are plentiful, including dishes adapted from Asian, Ryukyuan and Western cuisine as well as various health foods, all of them full of in-season ingredients. Appetizers, main dishes, soups and desserts are available.

The Purple Heart Terrace is recommended for a birdís-eye view of the beautiful and exotic Polynesian Lake. The terrace is made of purple heart, a wood originally from South America. True to its name, it turns purple in the light.

The lunch buffet is served between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and costs •1,365 for adults and •735 for children aged five to 12 (including tax). Credit cards, including VISA, MasterCard, UC, DINERS and JCB as well as dollars are accepted. Since the restaurant is located in the Southeast Botanical Gardens, an entrance fee -- •1,000 for adults and high school students and •500 for children aged three and older (including tax) - is charged.

The fantastic Flower Festival is also being held at the Southeast Botanical Gardens until March 31. Attractions abound, including the Hibiscus Garden, the Green House Paradise, the Beautiful Flowers Experience Studio, the Kaleidoscope Gallery and more. This is a great opportunity to feast on a delicious luncheon buffet while enjoying the festival.

To get to the Southeast Botanical Gardens, go north on Highway 58. From the Kadena Rotary, go east on Route 74. Turn left at Gate 3 on to Route 26. Follow the signs to the Southeast Botanical Gardens. Alternatively, head north on Route 329. Turn left at the Noborikawa intersection. Follow the signs to the Southeast Botanical Gardens. If you bring this paper with you, it will turn into a coupon that offers a set price (entrance fee and luncheon buffet) of •1,365 for adults and •735 for children (age five to 12), including tax. The coupon expires on March 31, 2003 and may be used for five people. Reservations are recommended for parties of three or more.
