Barge mishap gets company's operation license revoked

Date Posted: 1998-02-28

The Japanese Maritime Safety Agency recently revoked the working license for Oshiro-gumi Construction Company. The license allowed the company to use a barge and work on the reclamation project underway at Yonabaru Town.

Oshiro-gumi was responsible for care and maintenance of the barge. The barge is used for carrying away large stones and soil removed from the construction area.

Last Wednesday, however, the company was forced to move the barge to the other side of the wharf, inside the reef, due to rough weather. They dropped anchor and left the ship on what they thought was a safe area in the harbor. Later a large wave cut the chain attached to the anchor and the barge floated away and became stuck on the reef.

Oshiro-gumi is responsible for two other barges, but after this incident, the agency accusing the company of negligence decided to revoke the company's license.
