Date Posted: 1998-02-28

Hisgashi Fuji Maneuver Area, Camp Fugi, Japan-Marines from Battery T, 3rd Battalion, 12th marine Regiment (3/12) concluded 10 days of live-fire, artillery training at 7:57 a.m. today.

US and Japan officials previously agreed to conclude training no later than Feb. 22, but Capt. Curtis Williamson, Battery T, Commanding Officer, achieved his training no later than Feb. 22, but Capt. Curtis Williamson, Battery T, Commanding Officer, achieved his training objectives four days early, completing live firing in 10 continuous days despite poor weather conditions.

"The weather was often times poor, but we were prepared to fire when the skies cleared," said Williamson. "We could have come in from the cold for a couple of days, especially during times when the weather precluded us from firing. Instead, we used the weather as another element to enhance our training."

In accordance with existing JGSDF policy, Camp Fuji will employ their explosive ordnance personnel to conduct a sweep of the impact area to uncover and detonate any unexploded ammunition.

Over the next few days, Marines will be cleaning facilities and training areas within the maneuver site, packing their equipment and loading ships to return all their equipment to Okinawa. The Marines expect to return to Okinawa on March 3 via commercial aircraft.
