Mrs. Peel, we're needed!

Date Posted: 1998-02-21

John Weintraub Productions & Warner Brothers recently wrapped production on the movie version of the British adventure/spy show The Avengers. Based on the popular TV show that ran in the US several years ago, featuring Patrick Macnee as the bowler-wearing, three-piece suited , cane- carrying spy-about-town & his lovely fashion-conscious damsel, never-in-distress co-star Mrs. Emma Peel. The series became a fan favorite because of the bizarre story lines dealing with everything from cybernetic robot killers to misguided megalomaniacs who wanted to take over the world ala Pinky & The Brain. Many would argue that the popularity can also be attributed to the sheer charisma & energy which came from the almost sexual tension between the two spies way before X-Files' Sculley & Mulder.

The new movie has Ralph Fiennes (Strange Days) playing Mr. Steed, Uma Thurman ( Pulp Fiction and UGGH Batman & Robin) playing the black leather clad judo using Mrs. Peel & Sean Connery playing Sir August Wynter. Jeremiah Chechik (Benny & Joon) is directing from Don MacPherson's screenplay which involves the super spy duo being sent to take on an evil millionaire who has plans to blackmail the world by controlling the weather.

Expect bizarre scenes of life sized martial art teddy bears (Must have gone to same dojo as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), A robotic double of Mrs. Peel, animated statues, butlers in gas masks, secret chewing tobacco, Siberian sunbathing, floating talking pipes, another agent killed by a rainstorm of falling fish, cats & dogs living together (Sorry about the last one... I couldn't resist using Bill Murray's line from Ghostbusters) as reported by the UK magazine DreamWatch.

While the filming was supposed to start in February of 1996 with Nicolas Meyer (Star Trek II & VI, Time After Time) directing , several delays in both casting & a fire at the famed Pinewoods studio lot pushed the film's production schedule back. The studio has expressed that fans will not be disappointed in the movie, unlike The Saint which was visually appealing but had little or no relation to the movie & TV character played by Roger (James Bond) Moore. Filming was completed at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London on July 5th. The release date is set for June 26th.

Did You Know: That Avengers started off with John Steed showing up a couple of episodes in the first season's run , and eventually taking over the show completely in the following seasons there after?

To Tide You Over: Surf the cable channels as sometimes episodes of The Avengers may be scheduled.
