Three teens arrested for recless driving

Date Posted: 1998-02-21

Three boys aged 17 and 18, were arrested by the police for reckless driving and other serious traffic violations, after a police investigation into an incident Jan. 20, where a group of about 130 motorbikes raced up and down Highway 58 in Maejima, Naha City and Urasoe City.

According to Naha Police, many people called to complain about the gang members who were driving on the street at high speeds, against red lights, and armed with metal pipes and golf clubs terrorizing car drivers on the way. The motorcycles had large illegally souped-up engines, and most riders wore face masks and deep hats. All bikes had their license plates missing or bent so that it was impossible to identfy them.

Naha City Police mobilized the help of Urasoe City Police and Okinawa Prefecture Traffic Police whose investigation lead to the arrest of the three high shcool students who confessed. None of the three had a driving license.

At the end of January, a 16-year old boy was killed in a motorcycle accident related to the gangs. The investigation of that accident lead to the identification and arrest of the three.
