ATM broken into, 5,550,000 taken

Date Posted: 1998-02-21

A guardman discovered that someone had broken into JA Kadena Branch shop through a window, Tuesday. The guard called the police who discovered that the burglar had pried open a cash box and the ATM, supposedly with a crow bar or other similar tool. According to the JA Kadena branch manager, the burglar got away with 5,550,000 in cash. The burglar had also tried to break into another ATM on the premises but without success.

An ATM at the JA Kitanakagusuku branch had been broken into Saturday in similar manner and 300,000 was taken. Police is suspecting that there is a possibility that the same person has broken into both machines. Police are also looking into the possibility that the burglar had inside information of the cashflows in the JA. The reason that the ATM contained so much cash was that Wednesday was a payday for retirees. Because of recent rash of burglaries involving ATMs, police advise people to avoid putting cash into machines whenever possible.
