Taxi Association decides to combat congestion

Date Posted: 1998-02-21

Members of Okinawa PrefectureTaxi association held a large meeting, to determine what to do about parking problems and congested traffic around Kokusai Street in Naha City.

The area is plagued by almost 24 hours a day by traffic jams which make it very difficult to get in and out of the area. The taxi association decided that the solution to the problems is to curb long time parking in the area which disturbs the traffic flow, over zealous taxi drivers competing for customers, and parking on side roads.

At Kokusai Street, any given time hundreds of taxis stay in the street waiting for customers, some on the same spot for as long as 15 minutes. Taxi Association officials said that for a customer, a taxi shouldn't stop for more than three minutes. Officials added that taxis waiting in long lines is not good for customers, it's illegal, and the association has decided it disturbs people and workers.

Over the years customers and workers have complained about the situation to the association, and now the association has decided to take a stand. Association officials will start issuing citations to taxi drivers who violate the rules. The violators will be marked with a large red sign pasted on the car.

The taxis will not be the only targets. Delivery drivers and anyone who stops on the street for a long time even when sitting in the car, will risk a citation. The association already has hired three consultants who come to direct traffic and tell taxis where to park. More consultants are promised to be hired, to give more advice, and certainly citations.
